Planning - Producing A Storyboard

A storyboard is a sequence of drawings, with some dialogues. Showing the shots that it's planned for a film production.

Here is an example of the original Jurassic Park's storyboard, where David Lowery has designed it.

This storyboard shows where the dinosaur came alive for the first time in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park.

David Lowery has also the assistant art director for The Lost World: Jurassic Park and an illustrator for Jurassic Park.

In the presentation below, you can see a  part of our storyboard, which consists of our filming process. This is going to help us to film the scenes, as the storyboard tells us the camera angle, camera shot, camera movement and also the actors needed, and the location. We only picked out a part of the storyboard because it would be time consuming  to draw out every single shot, so we only chosed the main ones for the storyboard.

Planning: Changes To The Cast

We have made a change to the casting. We have decided to remove a character from our film opening. The character's name is Daniel. We thought it would better to do this because we couldn't find anyone that is suitable for his character. We don't think it is necessary to have four friends because we only need 2 boys and a girl as it is easier to work with less cast members. This also makes it easier for us to organise dates and times that are flexible for the cast members and the crew.

Planning: Writing A Treatment

The film starts with a low angle long shot of the four friends in town.

Then the production company's name comes up in the bottom of the first shot of the friends.

Then a close up of hands creating the map. In this scene, there is a non- diegetic sound in a low pitch.

A mid shot followed by close up shots of the friends, to make the audience more familiar with them.

Then there is a mid shot of each of the friends with the titles in the bottom of the scene. (The titles consist of the actors names.)

A close up of the hands making the map. Followed by a shot of the room showing the photos of dead people. (The room is dark and light only falls on the table where the killer is creating the map.)

Then a black screen comes up with the film's name. Non- diegetic sound can be heard that creates a feeling of danger.

A shot of the friends in town. Gabriella flicks David's hat off his head  as having fun.(Titles are shown here.)

Shot of David picking up the hat and finding something unusual.

A mid shot of David picking up something. (Titles are shown here.)

A close up of a scrolled up paper and David's hand picking it up.

You cannot see what is inside the paper as its scrolled up. Non- diegetic sound comes in, which creates tension in the scene.

A shot of the hands making the clues. An extreme close up of the photo of a tree
marked by a symbol that was seen earlier in the killer's room. More shots showing the room.

The friends gather around and looks at the map. this is shown by a long shot going into an extreme close up. When the map is shown in an extreme close up a non-diegetic sound can be heard. The sound is high pitch.

In our first question, we have asked their age group as our target audience is teenagers and as you can see in the bar-chart there's 85% that were from the age 16-18. This is good because that was our mainly  target audience to be.

We have also asked this because we needed to know if they enjoyed watching horror films, as they would know more about it and can give us more idea for our opening film.
In this bar-chart i can see that only 35% likes watching horror films.

In question 3, we have asked what types of horror films they like the most and as you can see in this bar-chart only 6% likes the  games but 33% prefers the psychological. This helped us a lot as by knowing this, we could add this in our opening as well, so many people can enjoy more watching this horror film.

Do you think the title suits the movie? If not what would you recommend?

In question 4, we have asked for their opening for the title of our film. Most of them said that it did suit the film. however we have thought about changing it to X marks the spot, as we are not sure if we want to change it or not yet.

What do you think about our initial idea? Is there any changes that we could do to make it better?

It is good. You could have the dead friend(s) try and help the killer.

Include some sort of context behind the map, where it derived from, what it was used for and what the purpose is. The mysterious black figure could be a ghost, one the friend or a creature.
12/7/2015 1:30 PM View respondent's answers
I think the initial idea is good as it builds up suspense but I would suggest killing off more than one friend

I think that it has potential to be a pretty interesting film, however the overall description/synopsis that you've included above is slightly confusing. I'm unaware of the significance of the map and how that leads to a game... does the map lead you to different locations in the woods, which is where you find the clues? hen you say 'clues' do you mean like rules as to what they have to do to move on to the next location? If so, it's kind of like the plot for 'Saw'. Overall, I think it sounds like a good idea, just try to be more clear on your summary as it will entice more people to read it and watch the film.
In question 5, we asked what they thought about our initial idea which was:
'Game Over is a teenage horror film about 4 friends who, whilst on a night out, came across an old map, which was created by an unknown entity. They decided to follow the map, which then led them into woods. When they arrived at the woods they found a set of clues that led them to specific locations. As they reached their destinations, they soon discovered that they  were about to be faced with really dangerous tasks that could potentially end in their death. One of the 4 friends thought it was a ridiculous idea so he decided to stop following the clues, which resulted in him getting murdered by a mysterious black figure. If they fail to complete the tasks, they will be tortured. After their friend's death,  the rest of the friends had to make the right decisions in order to stay alive.'

The majority said that it was good but others gave us some more ideas, like adding a a background into the story at the beginning or that the friend that died could be the bad guy, the one that creates the map.
All of this gave us lots of ideas for our initial idea.

How do you imagine the opening of the film would be?

Showing the woods and the skyline behind it. Make sure that it looks scary and dark. You could show the creature that kills one of the friends running through the woods to make the audience wonder what it is. Then go to the friends in town and finding the map.

In question 6, we have asked how would they imagine the opening film would be. On this question we had so many interesting answers and gave us new ideas for our opening film.

In conclusion i think that doing this survey was really useful, as we were a bit stuck because we didn't know what to do for our initial ideas and if we needed to change the title or adding more things to make it more interesting and the viewers likes it.
